Monsters

To all the children everyday
I often hear adults glibly say
"There's no such thing as monsters"

We lie to them to bring them peace
We lie to keep their lives at ease
We lie because we cannot bear
to let them know that everywhere
the monsters lie in wait.

Children know
adults try to forget
but monsters are alive and well
within each heart a monster dwells
though we never like to tell.

We carry monsters in our soul
I do believe that our life's goal
is to find a way to shed their skin
to bring fourth all the good within

Sadly many have lost the battle
and with their ignorance we are saddled
with greed, stupidity and racism
with intolerance and war
These monsters roar
and we scurry away

We hide in corners waiting for the light of day
We bow our heads and turn the other way
we silently watch feeling it's not our place to say
the magic words that would send these monsters away

To all the children everyday
I often hear adults glibly say
"There's no such thing as monsters"

We lie to them to bring them peace
We lie to keep their lives at ease
We lie because we cannot bear
to let them know that everywhere
the monsters lie in wait.
