STANDING STILL

Standing still on a stairwell
I blend into the night.
I stand so still that those who pass
I give an awful fright.

I stare off into the distance
Well past the wrought iron fences
Looking deep in to the night sky
Through thousands of starlight mints.

Lights flash before me.
Sounds creep up from behind.
But I stand still on the stairwell
As thoughts breeze through my mind.

What’s happening in the world around me?
What’s happening far away?
How long must I stand here waiting
For the break of day?

As I stand still on the stairwell
My thoughts blending with the shadows
I await the rising sun
The moment when the world and I are one.
